We can influence the biodiversity of our local environment through our own efforts. The biodiversity initiatives by the city of Uusikaupunki are suitable for smaller-scale application in residents' yards and cottages. Take note of the tips below.
 

Set up an insect hotel

The city's insect hotel is located near the Mörne office building, offering a resting place in the nearby field. Marketing has been targeted at various insects. The field provides a comprehensive buffet for even the most discerning tastes, featuring a diverse flower meadow with species such as harebells, evening-scented dames' rocket, yellow chamomiles, columbines, cornflowers, foxgloves, musk mallows, and Siberian poppies. 

Leaving deadwood on the property is the easiest way to provide shelter for the smallest inhabitants of our planet. The handiest craftsmen can also build more diverse creations without sparing any effort.

Replace part of your lawn with a meadow

You can explore landscape fields and meadows for example in Sorvakko, along the jogging trail or while playing frisbee golf at the course. The landscape fields were established in 2021. Nectar and pollinator plants are sown according to the cultivation plan with a five-year crop rotation. Meadows are also a valuable part of the Finnish cultural landscape, and their number has decreased.

You can replace part of your lawn with a meadow in your own yard or at your cottage. Even a square meter can add biodiversity to your garden. Meadow flowers can also be grown in a raised bed. Most meadow plants prefer dry and poor soil, so you can skip additional fertilizers and watering.

Various Benefits of a Brushwood Fence 

Landscape work, such as clearing brush from a heritage landscape, generates branch waste. This waste is also produced in home gardens and can be utilized by building a brushwood fence to separate the compost area from the rest of the yard. 

The brush growing along the city's frisbee golf course has been collected into a brushwood fence on site. A brushwood fence eliminates the need to transport branch waste. Additionally, it provides shelter for small birds and food for various insects. The brushwood fence also offers a habitat for decomposer fungi. The fence decomposes slowly from the bottom, and over the years, new branch waste can always be added to the top of the fence.
