Excavator hits bridge in Santtio – Bridge temporarily out of service
On Thursday, September 19th, shortly after eight in the morning, an excavator collided with a metal bridge in Santtio, which is designed for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge crosses Hiuntie, close to Ankkakuja and Tiiratori, and has a clearance height of five meters.
The boom of the excavator was raised slightly too high, which resulted in it hitting the bridge and causing the central part of the metal bridge to fall onto the roadway. Fortunately, there were no personal injuries, reports Mikko Jalonen, the city's work manager.
The fallen part of the bridge has been moved to the city's depot, and traffic on Hiuntie is flowing in both directions. Access to the metal bridge for pedestrian traffic has been blocked with heavy barriers.
Planning for the repair of the damaged bridge will begin as soon as possible. Mikko Jalonen notes that the repair measures are not particularly extensive. – The metal bridge is relatively easy to repair, but of course, the repair will take some time. Pedestrians must use alternative routes until the bridge is restored.
We ask all traffic users in the area to exercise caution and follow the temporary traffic arrangements. Further information on the progress of the repairs will be updated on the city's website.
